THQ Nordic and developer Campfire Cabal released the first Early Access update for Expeditions: Samurai on October 2. The update raises the maximum party size in many missions from four to six characters. Ten areas can now field parties of six, among them Nagasaki Port, Kanseidou Village, and an abandoned carrack ship, with enemy counts increased to match. Characters can carry barrels, which lets players set gunpowder barrels in the path of patrolling soldiers. Skill checks during conversations can be delegated to companions, enemy behavior in alert states has been changed, and character creation gains new hairstyles, heads, and outfits. Stealth during combat, weapon balance, trading, and conversations were adjusted, and critical bugs were fixed. On Steam the game is on sale at 2,896 yen, 34 percent off the 4,389 yen price. The game does not support Japanese.

THQ Nordic will begin early access for the PC (Steam) RPG 'Expeditions: Samurai' on August 7. Developed by Campfire Cabal, the game is the latest entry in the 'Expeditions' series of historical RPGs. Set in Japan around 1600, the protagonist travels from Europe aboard the Dutch frigate 'De Albatros' and becomes involved in the conflicts of the late Sengoku period. Players lead companions, choosing between stealth, diplomacy, or combat, with turn-based battles and the series' first two-player co-op. During early access, the developer will gather player feedback on game systems, balance, exploration, stealth, and turn-based combat, and use that feedback to shape the content of three major updates. The transition from early access to full release is planned for early 2027, and save data will carry over. The game currently does not support Japanese. A launch discount of 34% off is available until August 14.

THQ Nordic released a gameplay trailer for Expeditions: Samurai on July 28, 2026, ahead of the game's early access launch on Steam on August 7. The historical RPG is set in late Sengoku period Japan, around 1600, as a century of warfare moves toward its end. The player leads a privateer crew aboard the Dutch frigate De Albatros, arriving in Japan as a European before the historical figure William Adams, who was the first European granted the title of samurai. The trailer shows stealth assassinations, building infiltrations using items as diversions, dialogue-based negotiation, turn-based battles, and the series' first two-player co-op mode. Development is handled by Campfire Cabal, which includes staff from Logic Artists who worked on earlier Expeditions titles, with Jonas Wæver returning as creative director. A second development video log explains that the team began work in a library to deepen its understanding of the period and brought in a historical consultant. A roadmap detailing early access content and update plans is expected before launch.

THQ Nordic and developer Campfire Cabal announced that the historical RPG Expeditions: Samurai will begin early access on Steam on August 7, 2026. The game is set in Japan around 1600, at the end of the Sengoku period, and features a fictional Western protagonist who travels from England to survive the turmoil. A companion trailer released alongside the announcement introduces eight characters, including a thief, a sword master, a female warrior, and a cleric. The full version is planned for release in the first quarter of 2027, with additional features such as village management, crafting, and expanded character customization. The early access version includes combat, exploration, stealth, and a portion of the story. The price is expected to increase for the full release. The game supports two-player co-op, where a second player joins as the protagonist's twin sibling. The series' previous entry, Expeditions: Rome, received an 86% positive rating on Steam. The early access build does not currently support Japanese display.
