RPG Tsukuru Developers Trace 34 Years of History Ahead of U2U

Gotcha Gotcha Games is developing RPG Tsukuru U2U, the latest RPG Maker title, with its Steam page now live. The game uses new P2D (Perspective 2D) technology for depth and effects while keeping the traditional Tsukuru feel, and it allows reuse of past 2D assets. In an interview, producer Hiroyuki Ichinose and developer Yuzo Noguchi discussed the series' 34-year history, both having started with the Super Famicom's SUPER DANTE.

Both developers interviewed started with the Super Famicom's SUPER DANTE. Noguchi was in fourth grade when a TV commercial got his class excited and he borrowed the software from a friend. Ichinose was already working in game development, building RPGs on an original engine, and he recalls SUPER DANTE selling well around 1995, when Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy dominated the genre.

Ichinose credits the earlier RPG Tsukuru DANTE98 from 1992 with establishing the series' fundamentals. Noguchi remembers the pre-internet era, when sharing a game meant lending a cassette, and he does not recall any friend who finished a complete work, which taught him the difficulty of game creation alongside the fun.
