Florida AG Files for Temporary Injunction Against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed for a temporary injunction against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, requesting a court order to halt development of new AI models until an independent safety oversight system is established. The filing, submitted to a Florida state court, also seeks to block minors from using ChatGPT, prohibit the company from describing its products as safe and reliable, ban AI from behaving as if it were human, and stop mechanisms that draw users into extended conversations. Uthmeier cited OpenAI's recent security disclosures and Altman's own public statements about slowing frontier model development as legal grounds, arguing that if Altman is serious about slowing development, he should support the request. OpenAI has not commented on this injunction. The request follows a criminal investigation opened after the 2025 mass shooting at Florida State University, where the suspect was said to have used ChatGPT before the crime.
