Project Zomboid Hits 121,000 Concurrent Players After Build 42.20 Stable Release
The Indie Stone released the stable version of Build 42.20 for Project Zomboid on July 29, 2026, ending a roughly two-year development cycle that began with the Build 42 beta in December 2024. The update roughly doubles the size of the game's map, adding three new towns, high-rise buildings up to 32 floors, basements with bunkers and panic rooms, and expanded farming and animal husbandry systems. It also introduces three new game modes: Outbreak, Recovery, and Extinction, plus new challenge modes. Following the release, Steam concurrent player counts rose sharply, reaching 121,603 on August 2, according to SteamDB, a new all-time peak since early access began in 2013. The previous peak was around 65,000 during the Build 41 update in December 2021. Steam reviews over the last 30 days show 91% of 6,878 reviews are positive, though some users report crashes and multiplayer performance issues. Build 42 does not support Build 41 save data, but the older version remains playable as a legacy edition.
