The Vermillion Mask is a television anime adaptation of a manga by Dr.Poro and Nabana Naba. Otakon announced in July that cast and staff from the adaptation would appear at the convention, which ran from July 31 to August 2 in Washington, D.C. The adaptation was far enough along in production by then to send representatives for public panels.
At Otakon, the premiere panel showed only the first few minutes of episode 1 before stopping for a Q&A with director Tesukai Watanabe and voice actor Kazuki Ura. The brief footage introduced mask salesman Peru and a gang of kids attempting to steal a locked-away mask. Watanabe and Ura discussed the adaptation's underground source material and Ura's casting as Mok, the lead character, whose voice the panel tied to Ura's natural register.
Episode 1 aired later. It introduces Peru as apprentice to a mask maker killed along with the other apprentices by the mask maker's own greatest creation. Peru sets out to destroy his master's remaining masks. A girl named Sonarue, apparently a deposed princess, wants some of them for her own ends. The episode ends with Sonarue possessed by the Mask of the War God. The premiere review found standard shonen battle fantasy beats and dialogue lore-dumps for Peru, and called the transformation imagery given to Sonarue the episode's strongest material. The review suggested Sonarue's arc carries the social commentary the show has not yet developed.
