At Summer Game Fest 2026, RGG Studio officially announced Virtua Fighter Crossroads, a new title that producer Ryoichiro Yamada and brand director Toshihiro Nakaya described as neither a sequel, remake, nor remaster. The team aims to break the framework of traditional fighting games and create what they call a 'fighting adventure' genre, while preserving the series' core values of reality and innovation.
Sega has officially named the next entry in the Virtua Fighter series as Virtua Fighter Crossroads, a fighting adventure game scheduled for release in 2027. The title was revealed during Summer Game Fest 2026 on June 6, alongside a story trailer focusing on one of four new protagonists, Cielo. The game is set in the fictional Southeast Asian city of Villa Sapara, where firearms are banned and underground fighting tournaments drive the plot. Producer and creative director Riichiro Yamada explained in interviews that the game is not a numbered sequel like Virtua Fighter 6, but a deliberate departure that combines a narrative-driven single-player adventure with evolved versus fighting. The story uses an omnibus format following four new protagonists, while older characters like Pai Chan and Wolf appear aged to reflect the passage of time. The battle system retains the series' simple three-button controls but adds new mechanics like multi-opponent fights and boss battles in the story mode. Overseas writers including David Hayter and Brad Kane contributed to the scenario. Platforms and pricing remain unannounced.
Sega and Ryu ga Gotoku Studio formally announced the next entry in the Virtua Fighter series, titled Virtua Fighter Crossroads, during the Summer Game Fest 2026 livestream on June 6. The game is scheduled for release in 2027. Platforms have not yet been confirmed. The announcement trailer shows a new protagonist, an older Pai Chan, and a new fighter named Cielo. The trailer's description promises "a city you've never seen, a story you've never heard, a totally new Virtua Fighter." Sega of America described the game as taking an "unconventional new approach to the fighting game genre" while retaining the series' core legacy of realistic combat and simple controls. Multiple Japanese outlets noted that the trailer includes parkour-style movement through city environments, leading some to speculate the genre may blend fighting and action-adventure elements. Denfaminicogamer explicitly listed the genre as "fighting adventure." The project was previously referred to as the "New VIRTUA FIGHTER" Project, first teased in December 2024. A dedicated showcase stream, Virtua Fighter Crossroads Showcase, featuring producer and creative director Riichiro Yamada, is scheduled to air on June 6 at 9:00 a.m. JST.
