Why it matters
The episode makes the rejected-fiance setup do real work: Henri's past appreciation of Romelia and Elizabeth's scheming reframe the premiere's premise, so the series is building its antagonist and its backstory on the same timeline rather than spending the prince as a throwaway catalyst.

In the present, Romelia's outnumbered troops are still fighting the lizardman horde, with Ray shaken after his error left Al injured. Administrator Serbeck hopes the company is wiped out, so no reinforcements are coming. Romelia pulls her men through anyway.
The flashback is not pure nostalgia. Henri is shown valuing Romelia's counsel during the Demon King campaign, and Elizabeth's entrance is framed as scheming, which turns the fiance who discarded her into a character with a stake in the story. The present-day battle against the lizardmen carries the same idea at lower stakes: Romelia is not the strongest fighter or the most seasoned commander, but her men follow her because she talks to them, and when talk runs out she will hold a soldier down and force healing herbs into him. Ray's screw-up takes the episode's lesson on trust; the brief is that one bad call will not get him written off.
