The anime is an original story set in the same world and era as the Death Stranding game. Tow Ubukata, whose credits include "Mardock Scramble," is handling series composition and scripts. E&H production, the studio behind "NINJA KAMUI," is animating, with Takayuki Sano directing. Ilya Kuvshinov, known for "Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045," is the original character designer, and game director Hideo Kojima is executive producer. The teaser shows a world scarred by large craters and a girl asleep in goggles reading "SLEEP." The story follows a girl who cut herself off from the world after an explosion caused by the Death Stranding phenomenon, and the people she meets as America tries to reconnect. The series streams on Disney+ "Star" in 2027.
The teaser was released on the second day of the anniversary exhibition at Azabudai Hills Gallery, which runs through December 20. The gallery show includes what Kojima Productions calls the first public display of Death Stranding development materials, character statues, and a 360-degree video installation.
The anime's cast of characters is drawn from the teaser's own description: an old sage trying to restore the world's connections by unknown means, a female soldier trapped by destruction and conflict, and a boy angry at the world's absurdity. The girl at the center rejected connection after an explosion left her isolated. The setting is the North American continent right after Sam Bridges linked it through chiral communications, when the new connection brings a fresh calamity.
Kojima Productions is producing the anime with Kojima as executive producer, and the footage is hand-drawn. Sano, the director, said in a statement that "elevating something like the human spirit" is one of entertainment's jobs and that he feels a sense of mission for this anime to do the same.
