Immersive Ukiyo-e Exhibition Opens in Aomori, First in Tohoku

The Moving Ukiyo-e Exhibition AOMORI opens July 11 at the To-o Nippo Shinmachi Building New's Hall in Aomori City. It transforms over 300 works by masters like Hokusai and Hiroshige into 3DCG and projection mapping across nine immersive spaces. This is the exhibition's first stop in the Tohoku region. Opening day features a night museum until 8pm. A special Aomori section highlights local landscapes and connections to the Nebuta festival. A shop by local craft select shop Kusamura sells exclusive goods.

The exhibition is produced by digital creative company Hitohata and co-organized by the To-o Nippo newspaper, Aomori Broadcasting, and the To-o Nippo Cultural Foundation. Ukiyo-e advisor Horiguchi Masumi consulted on the content. The Aomori edition includes a newly created space that explores the relationship between ukiyo-e and Aomori's landscapes and the Nebuta festival, making it distinct from previous venues. Tickets are available online and at local retailers.
