Kamen Rider Rido Gets a House Cat Spin-Off with Rie Shibata

TTFC is using its supplementary Kamen Rider Mite slot to put a veteran comedy actor in a cat-sized domestic setup, which is a far smaller swing than the main Rider line and reads as a low-cost experiment in the fan club's original programming.

Kamen Rider Rido Gets a House Cat Spin-Off with Rie Shibata

Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club announced on September 20 that "Obasan to Rido" will stream from the morning of September 27 as episode four of the Kamen Rider Mite: Twelve Signs, Ten Colors series. Rido, a Kamen Rider modeled on a black cat, is turned into a house cat and lives with a grandma played by Rie Shibata, whose last Toei tokusatsu role was in 1993. Twin acrylic stands of Rido and Kamen Rider Mao as cats are also planned.

The spin-off keeps Rido in a domestic setting rather than a fight. Rie Shibata plays the grandma who takes him in, and the episode is framed around the quiet daily life the two share between battles. Shibata's return to Toei tokusatsu comes roughly 33 years after she played ET Obasan in Yugen Jikko Sisters Shushutorian, which aired in 1993, and she was a regular in the Toei Bizarre Comedy Series.

Merchandise follows the episode. Twin acrylic stands of Rido and Kamen Rider Mao, both in their cat forms, are set for sale, with details to come later.
