Manchuria Opium Squad Manga Gets Anime, Resumes With New Artist

The adaptation announcement is folded into the manga's own continuation, so the anime will be built on a series whose art has changed hands and whose remaining run is being drawn by someone other than the artist who defined it.

Manchuria Opium Squad Manga Gets Anime, Resumes With New Artist

Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine announced on Monday that Manchuria Opium Squad, written by Tsukasa Monma with art by the late Shikako, is getting an anime adaptation. The manga also resumed serialization the same day with new artist Tsurushima, formerly an assistant on Yasuhisa Hara's Kingdom. It returned with two chapters: a 12-page chapter 216 completed from Shikako's 11 pages, and chapter 217 onward drawn by Tsurushima.

The magazine's Monday issue carried the adaptation announcement alongside the series' return to serialization. Shikako died on November 8, 2025 from choroidal melanoma, and had wanted someone to complete the manga; the Weekly Young Magazine staff said at the time they would respect that wish.

Chapter 216 runs 12 pages, short of the 16 originally planned. Shikako completed 11 pages before their death. Monma arranged the 12th page, which has no characters, and assistants who had supported Shikako drew the background. From chapter 217, Tsurushima takes over the art.
