Yuasa's picks, and the films he will personally introduce, frame the program as a working director's account of animation history rather than a general retrospective.

Masaaki Yuasa to Curate Toronto Film Fest Animation Program

The Toronto Film Festival will run Drawn Universes: Visions in Animation, a classic film program curated by director Masaaki Yuasa, from Nov. 19 to Dec. 29 at TIFF Lightbox. Yuasa selected 17 features and four shorts, including work by Katsuhiro Otomo, Hayao Miyazaki, Sylvain Chomet and Rene Laloux. The series opens with Paul Grimault's The King and the Mockingbird and includes Yuasa introducing screenings of Richard Williams' The Thief and the Cobbler and Isao Takahata's Anne of Green Gables.

TIFF Lightbox hosts the series from Nov. 19 to Dec. 29. Yuasa will take part in conversations during the run and introduce two screenings himself: Richard Williams' The Thief and the Cobbler: A Moment in Time and Isao Takahata's Anne of Green Gables: Road to Green Gables. In a statement released by TIFF, he said he wanted to look back at films that sparked his own imagination and influenced the generations before and after him. The lineup reaches across countries and decades, from Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro and Pinocchio to AKIRA, Fantastic Planet, Toy Story 3, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Liz and the Blue Bird.
