Phoenix Future Arc Gets Stage Play Run in Tokyo This February
The Future arc, a 1967-68 serial set in A.D. 3404, is the part of Tezuka's unfinished cycle that keeps drawing new theatrical and animated adaptations, and this run adds another staging to a franchise that has been revisited in different media for decades.

Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix manga is getting another stage adaptation, this time of the "Future" arc. Hi no Tori Mirai-hen ZEROMDISTANCE runs at Sakura Hall in Shibuya Cultural Centre Owada in Tokyo from February 6 to 8. Jutta Yuki plays Masato, Narumi Yasuda voices the Phoenix, Moro Morooka plays Dr. Saruta, Adone Kudo and Shiina Yuzuki play Tamami, and Kaiki Ohara plays Rock. Ryusei Kudoh directs and writes.
The production is credited to director-writer Ryusei Kudoh, who is also executive producer, with Ryo Oguri producing and Nao'ymt handling music. It adapts the manga's "Future" arc, which Tezuka serialized from December 1967 to September 1968 and which the official Tezuka site describes as the story of Masato and Tamami fleeing an underground city-state in A.D. 3404 while the Phoenix guides them to Dr. Saruta's dome and the human race's final war begins.
Tezuka died in 1989, the year after the manga's 12th and final arc, "Sun," ended. The "Karma" arc was staged at Theatre West at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theater in July 2024.
