Reiwa High Schoolers' Favorite Anime Split Sharply by Gender in YTJP Poll
Demon Slayer, holder of Japan's top two all-time box office spots according to the same survey writeup, failed to reach the boys' top 10 while leading the girls' list at No. 2, which says the two audiences are reading popularity off different signals.
Reporting from 1 source: Magmix.
The YOUTH TIME JAPAN project surveyed 1,334 high school students, 614 boys and 720 girls, from September 10 to September 24, 2026, and released the results on Anime Day, October 22. Doraemon is the only title in both top fives. Boys named Attack on Titan first, then One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Doraemon. Girls named Haikyu!! first, then Demon Slayer, Crayon Shin-chan, Detective Conan and Doraemon.
The survey ran through Google Form entries from students at participating YTJP schools, and it also asked whether respondents liked anime at all. The gap there is narrower than the rankings suggest: 65.4% of boys answered "like" against 56.2% of girls, and combining "like" with "somewhat like" brought boys close to 90% and girls to around 80%. The rankings from sixth place down are published on the YTJP site.
Outside Doraemon, the two top fives share no titles. Four of the boys' five are Weekly Shonen Jump adaptations, and the girls' list is anchored by Haikyu!!.
- Attack on Titan: No. 1, boys
- ONE PIECE: No. 2, boys
- Jujutsu Kaisen: No. 3, boys
- JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: No. 4, boys
- Doraemon: No. 5, boys; also No. 5, girls, the only title on both lists
- Haikyu!!: No. 1, girls
- Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: No. 2, girls; did not make the boys' top 10
- Crayon Shin-chan: No. 3, girls
- Detective Conan: No. 4, girls
