Rez Staff Recall Unused Underworld and Aphex Twin Tracks

A 25th anniversary roundtable for Rez, held September 22 and 23 at The Tenth Mosaic at the Institut francais du Japon-Tokyo, brought producer Tetsuya Mizuguchi together with original director Jun Kobayashi, music producer Masakazu Hiroishi, and techno musician Ken Ishii. Mizuguchi said an Underworld version of Rez existed and Aphex Twin was on the verge of joining. Oval was added just before master-up.

The event ran two days. Mizuguchi opened with a lecture tracing Rez to 1997, when he encountered an electronic music street parade in Zurich and connected the crowd's surrender to music with the painter Wassily Kandinsky. He said the predecessor K Project searched for where groove is born, found an answer in call and response by way of Sado Island's onidaiko and Kenyan polyrhythms, and turned that into the act of shooting.

The roundtable that followed moved to music. Mizuguchi told the panel an Underworld version of Rez existed, Aphex Twin was on the verge of participating, and Oval slipped in just before master-up, alongside talk of songs by Fatboy Slim.
