Kenji Kamiyama's career reached a new peak in 2026 with his first Gundam project. At San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, Bandai Namco Filmworks announced Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a television series directed by Kamiyama, who also handles series composition. The show is part of the RG Project, which also includes the action game GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT. The anime is set in a new timeline, A.A. 45, where humanity abandoned Earth after an alien ecosystem called the Apocalypse overran the planet. The protagonist, Ray Azumi, a war orphan, pilots the Gundam Zero. Takeo Otsuka voices Ray Azumi. The series launches in 2027.

Kamiyama said the anime and the game share one world, with the game set 100 years later. The game team proposed the enemy concept, and the anime team built the war structure. He kept the tricolor robot and human war as essential Gundam elements. Anime News Network's This Week in Anime column examined his filmography, tracing his path from background artist on Akira and Kiki's Delivery Service to director of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and projects tied to Star Wars, Ultraman, and Blade Runner, positioning his Gundam work as the latest step in that arc.

Separately, Kamiya continued voice acting roles. He voices the Medicine Seller in the Mononoke film trilogy, whose third chapter, The Serpent God, will stream worldwide on Netflix starting September 29, 2026. He also voices Dozen in the Shozen anime, which premieres in April 2027, and Kai Izumo in the second season of Mission: Yozakura Family. No project announcements involving Kamiya appeared between the Gundam reveal and the end of August, aside from the release of the Mononoke film on streaming.
