MeetToMatch will hold its sixth annual Tokyo Edition from September 17 to 20, 2026, during the Tokyo Game Show 2026 period. The event connects Japanese game companies with overseas counterparts through pre-arranged business meetings. Japan-based companies can participate free of charge, with registration available on the dedicated website. Last year, 571 companies from 45 countries took part, including 120 Japanese firms, and 93% of meetings involving Japanese companies were with overseas partners. So far in 2026, 361 companies have registered on the platform, among them Bandai Namco Entertainment, Sega, Kodansha, Shochiku, Colopl, Drecom, G-mode, Kotobuki Solution, Crunchyroll K.K., 505 Games Japan, Active Gaming Media, Toylogic, and Chorus Worldwide. Meetings can be held at Makuhari Messe booths, public spots, rented rooms, restaurants, or online via Zoom, Google Meet, or a proprietary time-zone-adjusting system. Shochiku's Hiroaki Ishige noted that the most common contact he receives at conferences is from people who found him through MeetToMatch. The service is independent of Tokyo Game Show and not an official TGS offering.

The staff of the television anime adaptation of Izushiro and Ruria Miyuki's light novel series The Greatest Magicmaster's Retirement Plan announced on Wednesday that Yui Ogura will voice the character Loki Leevahl. Loki is described as a high-ranking Magicmaster who transfers to the magical institute as a partner to the protagonist Alus Reigin. The announcement included a character visual for Loki. The anime is scheduled to premiere in 2027. Yuto Uemura stars as Alus Reigin, the nation's top Magicmaster out of more than 100,000, who requests retirement from military service at age 16 but instead ends up as a student at a special magical institute, hiding his identity while training successors and secretly defeating Fiends. Yusuke Suzuki is directing the anime at studio HOTLINE, with series scripts by Gigaemon Ichikawa, character designs by Yuki Kitajima, and sound direction by Takatoshi Hamano. A prequel manga, The Greatest Magicmaster's Retirement Plan Zero: The Secret History of the Beginning, is scheduled to launch this winter, depicting Alus' life before he enrolled in the magic academy. J-Novel Club publishes the novels in English.

Bandai Spirits is launching a new Gundam figure brand called ABSOLUTE ACT, built around the ABSOLUTE ACTION SYSTEM for articulation. The first entry is the Strike Freedom Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY, which received its world first display at TOKYO Toy Show 2026, running from August 27 to August 30, 2026. The approximately 185mm tall ABS/PVC figure features movable mechanisms in the neck, shoulders, and waist, plus a waist rail mechanism and shoulder pull-out mechanism for dynamic posing. It includes a high-energy beam rifle, two beam sabers, a connected saber handle, two beam shields, interchangeable wrist parts, and a base with a bendable support rod. Reservations begin August 27, 2026, at general retail stores, with release scheduled for March 2027 at 16,500 yen including tax. TOKYO Toy Show 2026's first two days are trade-only, with public access on August 29 and 30. The show also featured other Gundam items at the Bandai Spirits booth, including Gundam Miximize Gundam Zero and HG 1/144 Gundam Zero.

Good Smile Company is accepting reservations for the MODEROID Mini Gattai Henshin Getter 1, an assembly model kit from Getter Robo that lets the three Getter Machines, Eagle Go, Jaguar Go, and Bear Go, fully combine into Getter 1. The kit uses molded colors, pre-painted parts, and stickers to reproduce a color scheme close to the anime image. It features a simple transformation mechanism with no leftover parts or part swapping, and includes two Getter Tomahawk weapon parts. Priced at 3,900 yen including tax, the kit is a second re-release of a product that first came out in February 2025. Reservations close on August 26, and shipping is scheduled for December 2026. This is one of several MODEROID releases announced around the same time, including re-releases and new kits for Panzer World Galient, Iron Linebarrel, and Dancouga: Super Beast Machine God.

Dengeki Hobby Web's TOKYO Toy Show 2026 breaking reports covered a wide range of first-time displays and new items across multiple manufacturer booths. Studio Sota showed its official mascot character "Bani Pockle" collection figure (tentative) for the first time, alongside a miniature tooth model, "Ketsurikuko -Arachne- Rebirth," and more. Good Smile Company announced on August 21, 2026 that 2B and A2 from NieR:Automata will be made into figures in the POP UP PARADE L size line. RayNeo will release the AR glasses "RayNeo GT Max" on September 4. The price is undecided. The GT Max connects to smartphones, tablets, PCs, and other video-output devices to deliver a large-screen experience. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will release The Irregular at Magic High School THE MOVIE - Yotsuba Succession Arc - in theaters across the United States and Canada on November 1, 3, and 4, 2026. The film will screen with Japanese audio and English subtitles, as well as an English dub. It is the second theatrical entry in the franchise and continues the story after the third TV season, which aired in 2024. The story, set in 2096, follows Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba as they attend the Yotsuba Clan's New Year's Banquet, where the next clan head will be announced. Warren Spector, the producer behind "Ultima Underworld," "System Shock," and "Deus Ex," announced his retirement from game development in a LinkedIn post. Spector entered the tabletop RPG industry in 1983 and joined Origin Systems in 1989, where he worked on "Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss" (1992) and "System Shock" (1994). He later moved to Looking Glass Studios for "Thief: The Dark Project" (1998) and then to Ion Storm, where he released "Deus Ex" in 2000. His career also includes "Epic Mickey" (2010) at Disney Interactive Studios and work on the unreleased "System Shock 3" at OtherSide Entertainment, where he served as co-founder and Chief Creative Officer. Spector said his career spans 44 years, with 17 games and 9 expansion packs, and his final work is "Thick as Thieves." He cited age, health issues, and a changing game business as reasons, saying he no longer finds it enjoyable. He plans to focus on writing, reading, lecturing, consulting, and practicing piano, while remaining involved in the industry through consulting.

ABEMA announced on August 14 that it will hold a "Heisei Girls' Anime Special" as the third week of its August "Anime 200 Titles Free Festival Every Week" project. Starting late on August 16, the streaming service will run marathon broadcasts of Aikatsu!, Tamagotchi!, and Shugo Chara! on its Family Anime 3 channels. Each work will be available for free for one week after broadcast. The Aikatsu! marathon begins at 2:30 a.m. on August 17 and covers all 178 episodes of the first through fourth seasons, plus the first film, Aikatsu! The Movie. The Tamagotchi! marathon starts at 1:00 p.m. on August 17, featuring the first series that aired from 2009 to 2012, including the "Lovely Tamatomo Arc," "Happy Harmony Arc," and "Collect Tama Heart Arc." The Shugo Chara! marathon begins at 11:00 p.m. on August 17, covering the first and second seasons of the anime based on PEACH-PIT's manga from the girls' magazine Nakayoshi. The festival runs four consecutive weeks in August, offering about 200 popular anime titles for free with a different theme each week.

The trailer for 'ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES: ORGANIC INTELLIGENCE' has been released. It is the fifth installment in the B-movie horror series and the first new film in about 35 years, following 1991's 'Killer Tomatoes: The Legend of the Red Tomato Sauce.' David Ferino directs. The film depicts genetically rewritten vegetables failing and releasing smarter killer tomatoes. It screens overseas from August 7. The 1978 original is on YouTube.

Good Smile Company has opened reservations for a new figure of Tamamo Cross from the TV anime "Umamusume: Cinderella Gray." The figure, part of the Mini Memory line, captures the character's nervous expression before a race. It stands approximately 80mm tall and includes a base. The product is a plastic painted finished figure, non-scale, with a prototype by jinsk. Reservations are available on Amazon.co.jp and at the official Good Smile Company shop, with a price of 3,900 yen including tax. The scheduled release date is February 28, 2027. The reservation period at the official shop runs from July 31 to September 9, and the figure will also be available at partner shops. The Mini Memory series is a line of deformed figures based on memorable scenes from the work, designed for display on desks or collection racks. Wired Productions announced on August 1 that ShipShaper, the new shipbuilding simulator from Dutch indie developer Tomas Sala, will enter Early Access on Steam on September 3, 2026. The game is an open-ended tool focused on the comfort of designing ships, with no combat, resource management, or grid-based rules. Players assemble vessels from fishing boats to armored warships and submarines by pulling, pushing, and bending hull parts, then display finished ships in bottles or dioramas for photo mode. Completed ships can also be imported into Sala's previous work, Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles, to sail, or exported as FBX 3D models for use in other projects or 3D printing. A free commercial license is included, so designs can be used in personal commercial projects or mod development. The Early Access version expands the current demo, adding water sailing, historical armaments, turrets, propulsion systems, sail types, lighting, props, and more flexible modeling tools. Sala said he could keep building ships alone, but the real magic comes when players create works he never imagined. The game currently supports only English, and a demo is available now.

Gaming Factory and Beep Japan released a large update for the open-world drift racing game JDM: Japanese Drift Master on July 30, 2026. The update adds multiplayer events to the PC (Steam) version, supporting online versus play for up to 8 players. Players can join from the open world or the main menu and compete in 15 race events across three categories: grip races, drift races, and 1-on-1 challenges. Examples include the drift event Haikama Lake Drift, Highway Grip, and Tofuna Downhill / Uphill 1vs1. The developers are preparing future support for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. The update also adds a new side story campaign called Ayumi, available for free on all platforms. This campaign includes 8 events, told in manga format, and clearing all events rewards players with a vehicle exclusive to Ayumi. The update includes bug fixes and gameplay improvements across all platforms, such as adjustments to vehicle display and garage features, crash fixes, photo mode improvements, and open-world behavior adjustments. The PS5 version adds basic Fanatec steering wheel support and improved Japanese localization.

Hiro Mashima's Fairy Tail is back in Weekly Shonen Magazine with a new short-term series, Fairy Tail: Re:Fantasia, which began serialization in the magazine's 35th issue released on July 29, 2026. The series is part of the franchise's 20th anniversary celebrations and marks Mashima's first appearance in the magazine in two years. To mark the occasion, a lineup of creators from across different publishers and editorial departments contributed illustrations of Fairy Tail characters. The contributors include George Morikawa of Hajime no Ippo, Koji Seo of Kaigo no Umi no Oto, Miki Yoshikawa of A Couple of Cuckoos, Atsuo Ueda of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, Yudetamago of Kinnikuman, and Yoshihiro Togashi of Hunter x Hunter. Togashi's illustration of protagonist Natsu has drawn particular attention on social media, with fans commenting on its style. Netflix announced it will stream Gintama: The Movie 2026: Yoshiwara in Flames starting August 27. The compilation film, which opened in Japan on February 13, ranked #2 in its opening weekend, selling 262,700 tickets and earning 405,617,328 yen (US$2.64 million) in three days. It covers episodes 139-146 with newly animated scenes and an original character voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi. Alibi Games and Revira Interactive released the first-person horror game 'Photomaly' on Steam on July 21, 2026. Set in a photo studio inherited from the player's father, the game combines job simulator mechanics with gradual horror.
