A hands-on session with Tropico 7 at Tokyo Game Show 2026, held at Makuhari Messe from September 17 to 21, ran through the Modern era of four available eras: Colonial, World Wars, Cold War, and Modern. The demo city already faced supply problems, and the new terraforming feature lets players fill in sea, level mountains, and flat land, while a council page consolidates faction requests ahead of elections.
Kalypso Media Japan announced on September 18 that a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Tropico 7 is set for release on January 28, 2027. The Switch 2 edition is titled Tropico 7 Special Edition and is handled by porting studio Engine Software, with series developer Gaming Minds Studios on the main game. It joins PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, Xbox PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, and arrives on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on day one. The Switch 2 build supports Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for construction and island management, plus voice chat and screen sharing through GameChat. El Presidente and the palace exterior can be customized. Tropico 7 is a dictatorship simulation where the player runs a Caribbean island nation across the colonial period, the World Wars, the Cold War, and the modern day, with a revised constitution system, new edicts, a political matrix, and terraforming.
Tropico 7 was shown in a hands-off presentation at gamescom 2026 in Cologne. The series adds terraforming for the first time, letting players raise and carve land, build lakes, and expand islands, alongside curved roads and free building placement. Citizen simulation now includes parked cars, walking residents, and garbage collection. The political system is overhauled with a political matrix that ties the president's ideology to available decrees, plus factions, media influence, and a new Council.
Kalypso Media has set Tropico 7's overseas release date for January 28, 2027, with the domestic date to come. A hands-on demo on a 5,000-citizen island confirmed that each individual is fully simulated from birth to death. Satisfaction is calculated from actual visits, so a hospital without available appointments fails to meet health needs.
Kalypso Media will run a worldwide campaign called 'A Month of Celebration' through August to mark its 20th anniversary on August 16, 2026. The publisher and developer, founded in 2006 in Worms, Germany, will offer discounts, bundles, giveaways, in-game events, merchandise, and a 'Tropico 7' dev blog.
