Sega Releases Hiro Essential Works Playlist Of 118 Tracks
Sega is packaging its arcade sound history as a curated streaming product rather than a reissue, and using the creator's own selection to give the 118 tracks an editorial frame for listeners who never bought the boards.

Sega released "Hiro - Essential Works" on Spotify and Apple Music on September 25, the third volume of its playlist project centered on the company's creators. The 118-track playlist was selected by Hiro (Hiroshi Kawaguchi), who composed music for the Taikan Game series including Out Run. It includes Hang-On and Space Harrier tracks alongside Fantasy Zone, Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars, Rent-A-Hero, and maimai. Sega says more creator playlists will follow.
The playlist runs from Hang-On, the first game Hiro handled sound for, through maimai. Where a track has an arranged version alongside the original, Hiro sequenced them so the two can be heard back to back. He also included versions of songs written by other people that he arranged himself.
Sega already has two earlier entries in the series streaming: sets for Tomoya Ohtani and Jun Senoue, each on Spotify and Apple Music. Hiro said in his published comment that the count passed 100 songs while he was gathering material, and that he was told it was fine, so the final list runs to 118. He describes it as a fragment of 40 years of history.
