Kadokawa's Dengeki Bunko imprint announced on Friday that writer Keiichi Sigsawa and illustrator Kouhaku Kuroboshi, the duo behind Kino's Journey, will launch a new light novel series titled Drifted ~John Smith no Edo Hyoryu Kitan~. The first volume ships on November 10. The story follows a wandering man who works jobs alongside ninjas, yokai, and preternatural-powered beings.
The new series carries the subtitle Drifted ~John Smith no Edo Hyoryu Kitan~, rendered in English as Drifted ~Strange Tale of John Smith's Drifting in Edo~. The premise places its wandering lead among ninjas, supernatural yokai entities, and preternatural-powered beings, all of whom he partners with to carry out his jobs. A first volume is dated for November 10 on the Dengeki Bunko label.
The pairing is the same one that has carried Kino's Journey since the novels began serializing in Dengeki HP magazine in 2000. Kadokawa shipped the 24th volume in September 2025, and Yen Press announced on Friday that it has licensed the original novel series.
