thatgamecompany Launches thatgamepublisher Label for Emotional Games

thatgamecompany, the studio behind Journey and Sky: Children of the Light, announced on August 25, 2026 that it has established a new publishing label called thatgamepublisher. The label targets ambitious, emotionally resonant games and supports developers who use interactivity to expand the emotional range games can convey. According to an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, the success of Sky, particularly in the Chinese region, generated surplus funds that enabled the creation of the division. Co-founder Jenova Chen said indie studios with hit titles naturally want to invest in areas they understand, citing examples like Pocketpair and its Palworld publishing arm. thatgamepublisher will offer more than funding, including production planning, platform and launch strategy, marketing, community building, and long-term IP development. The division also plans to invest in larger AA-scale projects, a departure from typical indie publishers that invest under $1 million. Publishing contracts for several titles were already signed at the time of the interview, though details were not disclosed. The company's official X account invited developers of any team size, development stage, or genre to apply.

Furyu Brings ANOMALITH and CRYMELIGHT Demos to Three Game Shows

Furyu Corporation announced on August 26 that its upcoming titles ANOMALITH and CRYMELIGHT will be playable at gamescom 2026, PAX WEST 2026, and Tokyo Game Show 2026. The gamescom appearance runs from August 26 to August 30 in Cologne, Germany, at Hall 10.1, Stand F063. PAX WEST 2026 takes place September 4 to September 7 in Seattle, Washington, at Booth 633. Tokyo Game Show 2026 runs September 17 to September 21 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, at Booth 09-C63. At Tokyo Game Show, attendees can play a complete demo of CRYMELIGHT covering the main story from its start, including battles, plus the latest ANOMALITH demo that incorporates the September update. Furyu also released an update for the ANOMALITH demo currently on Steam, based on user feedback. The update adds mouse support for menus and inventory, expands keyboard key bindings, adds mouse sensitivity adjustment, allows recovery items to be used via shortcut, and adjusts player animations. ANOMALITH is a survival third-person shooter set in a Showa-era Japan where players explore anomalous spaces. CRYMELIGHT is a roguelike action game set in the afterlife where characters confess sins to grow stronger. ANOMALITH releases October 29, and CRYMELIGHT releases November 5.

Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault Launches September 2, Original Goes Free on Steam

11 bit studios and Digital Sun announced on August 5 that Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault will officially launch on September 2, 2026. The sequel, which entered Early Access on PC on November 19, 2025, will leave Early Access with version 1.0, concluding the main story and adding new weapons, armor, and endgame content. The game is available on PC (Steam and Microsoft Store), PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, and is also on PC and Xbox Game Pass. To mark the release date announcement, the original Moonlighter is being distributed free on Steam until August 9. The 2018 action RPG, developed by Digital Sun, combines dungeon exploration with shop management, and has a 'Very Positive' rating on Steam from about 17,000 reviews. The free distribution period is August 5 to August 9, and the game will remain in players' libraries permanently. A free demo of Moonlighter 2 is also available on all platforms, and pre-orders have started on PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2.

Fate/Grand Order Mash Kyrielight Joins PLAMATEA Model Kit Line

Max Factory has opened pre-orders for a new PLAMATEA model kit of Mash Kyrielight from the smartphone RPG Fate/Grand Order. The kit depicts Mash in her Ortinax spiritual foundation exoskeleton form, based on her in-game illustration. It is a non-scale, snap-fit, fully articulated plastic model with pre-painted face parts including a smiling face, a shouting face, and a smiling face variant. The kit includes a shield, bangs with and without a visor, and a large Black Barrel that can transform through partial part replacement. The Black Barrel measures approximately 500mm in length when deployed, while Mash stands about 165mm tall. The kit comes with a dedicated display base with an adjustable support arm. Pre-orders are available on Amazon Japan at a price of 17,800 yen including tax, with a scheduled release date of April 30, 2027. The prototype is by Max Factory, with production cooperation from mffp. The product is part of the PLAMATEA series, a new line of humanoid plastic models from Max Factory.

Dying Light 2 Leads PS Plus August 2026 Free Games Lineup

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the PlayStation Plus free games lineup for August 2026 on July 29. Three titles will be available to subscribers from August 4 through August 31. The headliner is Dying Light 2 Stay Human, an open-world action RPG set in a zombie-infested city, available on PS5 and PS4. The sequel to 2015's Dying Light, it features parkour movement, weapon modification, and up to four-player co-op. Also included is Big Walk, a multiplayer cooperative walking game for two to twelve players, developed by House House, the studio behind Untitled Goose Game. It launches on August 4 for PS5 and joins the free lineup the same day. The third title is SIGNALIS, a survival horror game for PS4 set in a dystopian future where a humanoid android named Elster searches for her missing partner Yang. All three games can be added to a subscriber's library during the distribution period and played while the subscription remains active. The lineup applies to overseas regions, and the Japanese selection may differ. An additional PlayStation Plus Pack for the fighting game MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls will be distributed on August 6.

Furyu's Anomalith and Crymelight to Be Playable at ChinaJoy 2026

Furyu's Survival TPS Anomalith Demo Drops August 1

Furyu announced on July 25 that a limited-time demo for its survival third-person shooter Anomalith will launch on Steam from August 1 to August 8. The demo is part of the Six One Demo Days event, a week-long showcase organized by Six One Indie that features around 250 game demos. Anomalith is set in a fictional Showa-era Japan where players control 17-year-old Reona Minazuki, an investigator for the Special Hazard Zone Countermeasures Office searching for a missing friend in anomalous spaces called Otherworlds. The game combines exploration, resource management, and combat against creatures called Anomalies, with 12 unique transformation abilities. A closed demo test held from June 19 to June 28 drew roughly 75% positive responses, with only 18% of participants listing Furyu titles among their favorite games, suggesting the title appeals beyond the studio's existing fanbase. Feedback from that test prompted adjustments including the addition of a Story difficulty and a constant dash setting, which will be in the August demo. Anomalith is scheduled for full release on October 29 for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. A separate demo for Furyu's roguelike action game Crymelight will also be available during the same event.

Senior Creative Director Dave Richard and Head of Partnerships Mathieu Côté detailed the challenges of implementing Jason, including perfecting his mask and designing his ability to disappear into mist and ambush survivors. They explained that Jason's title "The Slasher" comes from the horror subgenre name. The developers also revealed two new modes in development: a competitive 1v1 mode without perks, and a Zombie Mode where survivors create a vaccine while AI-controlled zombies and a killer pursue them. A film adaptation with Blumhouse was announced, with Côté saying the studio approached them. Deputy CEO Nathan Sellyn and Executive Producer José Ramos added that the last two years have been the game's best, and that future plans include adding voice to original characters, a major visual update, and MOD support arriving in 2027. They called Japanese fans one of the most special and influential communities for the game.

Free Zombie Battle Royale FPS Fight or Flight to Be Discontinued on Steam

Outer Planet Studios announced that Fight or Flight, a free-to-play PvPvE shooter on Steam, will be discontinued soon. The game features battle royale, extraction, deathmatch, and team deathmatch modes, with solo play against bots. Developer Jonathan could no longer maintain it. Players who add it to their library can still download and play it after delisting.
