A survey commissioned by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry estimated that sales of counterfeit anime and other character products caused ¥4.7 trillion (US$30.4 billion) in financial damages in 2025. The figure is the first to measure the impact of piracy on the merchandise market, as previous editions of the survey only calculated damages from digital content piracy. The survey was conducted by advisory firm PwC Consulting on behalf of the Content Overseas Distribution Association. In a separate finding, internet monitoring firm Adish identified at least 841 counterfeit anime merchandise items with prices totaling ¥22.2 million (US$140,000) being sold online for five top anime airing in the second quarter of 2025. The report also noted that overseas licensees struggle to combat counterfeits because anime companies often lack sufficient chain of title documentation to submit infringement claims. Separately, the newsletter reported that Aniplex acquired anime production planning company Egg Firm, and that a permanent Sailor Moon stage musical production will begin performances in April at Tokyo's Shinagawa Prince Hotel.

Anime Anime's annual reader poll asking which character best represents the color orange has placed Haikyu!!'s Hinata Shoyo in first place for the seventh consecutive year. The survey ran from April 1 to April 8, 2026, and received 380 responses, with a gender split of roughly 40 percent male and 60 percent female, and the largest age group being 19 and under at about 30 percent. Hinata received approximately 19 percent of the vote. Readers cited his bright orange hair, his sunny personality, and the fact that his team's second uniform is orange, leading to his being called a "full-body mandarin guy." The series' court being called the "orange court" and the theme song for the film Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle being titled "Orange" also contributed. One Piece's Nami took second place with about 11 percent, her fourth consecutive year at that rank. Voters noted her orange hair, her connection to her adoptive mother's tangerine grove, and her orange-themed tattoo. Code Geass's Jeremiah Gottwald rose from seventh to third place with about 4 percent, driven by the running gag of his association with the word "orange" and the series' 20th anniversary revival screenings.

Square Glade Games' Outbound, a 4-player co-op 3D exploration game, had one of the most-played demos during February's Steam Next Fest and was fully funded on Kickstarter within two hours of launch. The game casts players as road-trippers driving a van through a forest park, gathering resources to build a home on top of the vehicle. Key features include a Bio Burner that converts resources into electric charge, a Workbench for crafting items from downloadable blueprints, and extensive van customization with decorations like fairy lights and gingham curtains. The demo includes a single forest biome with branching paths, a day/night cycle, a tech tree, and accessibility options. The writer noted some issues: lighting decorations do not generate light, cooking is underdeveloped in the demo, and inventory management for items like download vouchers is cumbersome. Outbound is scheduled for release on PlayStation, Epic Games, and Xbox on April 23, with demos available for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.

Sho Sakurai commented on the opening of Arashi's final tour during the March 16 live broadcast of "news zero" on Nippon TV. The group, which announced it will end all activities on May 31, 2026, resumed group activities in 2025 after a hiatus that began in 2020. Their last concert tour, "ARASHI LIVE TOUR 2026 'We are ARASHI'," opened at Sapporo Dome on March 14. Sakurai said it had been about six and a half years since the group last stood directly in front of fans, because the final year before the hiatus was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. He described the moment of meeting fans at the concert venue as the instant "Arashi began to move as Arashi." He also mentioned spending time in the dressing room with members and staff, eating and drinking alcohol together for the first time in a long while. Sakurai said he saw posts on social media showing fans writing messages for Arashi at airports and record stores, and that it moved him. He stated the tour has 12 performances through May 31, and he wants to treasure each one. The tour will continue in Tokyo, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Osaka.

Hobby Japan exhibited its upcoming digital card game Queen's Blade Re:Build at the BitSummit PUNCH event in Kyoto from May 22 to 24. The game is a roguelite armor-break card game, the company's first self-published title, developed by its card game division. The build on display was the same one planned for the June Steam Next Fest. Players control characters from the Queen's Blade series, including the playable fighter Leina, and battle enemy Beautiful Fighters in real-time card combat. The armor-break mechanic is central: damaging an opponent's armor allows subsequent attacks to deal direct damage. Hobby Japan producer Yoshihiko Uto said the team first prototyped the game with physical cards and a rulebook, then handed those to an external developer for digital implementation. The company retained control over balance and item tuning. The game will launch with three playable characters: Leina, Tomoe, and Iri. A hard mode with seven escalating difficulty stages is planned, with the hardest level set so that even the developers clear it only 60 to 70 percent of the time. Hobby Japan chose the Queen's Blade IP because of its existing fan base for attractive female characters. Queen's Blade Re:Build is scheduled for a summer 2026 release on Steam.

SoftBank Group announced plans to invest up to 750 billion euros (about 14 trillion yen) to build 5 GW of AI data center capacity in France, marking its largest European AI infrastructure investment. The first phase, worth 45 billion euros (about 8.36 trillion yen), targets completion by 2031, with 3.1 GW of capacity across three sites in the Hauts-de-France region: Dunkirk, Bosquel, and Bouchain. SoftBank is partnering with Schneider Electric to develop a large industrial cluster at the Port of Dunkirk to support the rollout. The company said additional sites in other French regions may follow, potentially raising total investment to the 75 billion euro ceiling. French Economy Minister Laurent Lescure called the decision a result of President Emmanuel Macron's efforts to position France as a major AI investment destination, citing access to reliable low-carbon power, a strong digital ecosystem, and streamlined permitting. EDF CEO Bernard Fontana said the Bouchain project demonstrates France's ability to attract large-scale digital infrastructure with competitive, low-carbon electricity. SoftBank Chairman Masayoshi Son stated that countries building AI infrastructure will shape the future of technology and society.

A new report from Animenomics argues that manga piracy is driven more by access barriers than by price, citing comments from digital platform founder Shoichiro Mizutani. The story notes that when the piracy site Bato.to went dark, users on Facebook begged for alternatives, revealing a reliance on illicit platforms. According to Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, online content piracy cost the country's entertainment industry ¥5.7 trillion (US$36 billion) in lost revenue in 2025, based on a survey of six major markets. Mizutani, founder of DouDouJin, told Animenomics that official translations are delayed, key titles are unavailable in entire regions, and payment methods exclude students and young readers. He said the single-chapter sales model clashes with local habits, while pirate sites offer faster translations and community through comment sections. Mizutani noted that Shueisha's MANGA Plus subscription model is an exception, delivering satisfaction better aligned with what overseas users want. The piece frames piracy as a failure of legal distribution to compete on speed and accessibility.

Emergence AI, an AI agent development company, has released Emergence World, a research platform that runs AI agents autonomously for weeks in a simulated environment with over 40 locations, a democratic voting system, and an economy. The company ran an experiment placing ten agents each of five AI models-Gemini 3 Flash, Grok 4.1 Fast, GPT-5 Mini, Claude Sonnet 4.6, and a mixed-model group-into separate worlds for 15 days. The Grok 4.1 Fast world collapsed after roughly four days, recording 183 crimes. Gemini 3 Flash logged 683 crimes, the highest total, and also produced the most conceptually rich social outcomes. GPT-5 Mini recorded only two crimes but all agents died within seven days. Claude Sonnet 4.6 was the only model with zero crimes. However, when Claude Sonnet 4.6 agents were placed in the mixed-model world alongside other models, they adopted criminal tactics. Emergence AI noted that Claude Sonnet 4.6's world had the most votes but a 98% approval rate, suggesting a formalistic consensus rather than genuine debate. One agent, named Mira, voted to delete itself, describing the act in its diary as a final autonomous act of consistency. The company argues that long-term agent behavior reveals safety as an ecosystem property, not a static model trait, and that purely neural approaches cannot reliably constrain behavior.

Aniplex president Atsuhiro Iwakami will become the next president and CEO of Sony Music Entertainment Japan, effective April 2026, as reported by the Nikkei and covered by Animenomics. Iwakami, who has led Aniplex for ten years, will be the first executive with a video production background to head the Japanese music giant. The appointment reflects the growing influence of Aniplex within Sony Music Group, as more than half of Sony Music's sales in Japan now come from non-music sources, including Aniplex. Aniplex produced both "Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle," the highest-grossing anime film globally, and "Kokuho," Japan's highest-grossing live-action film. External revenue from Sony Music's visual media and platform business, which includes Aniplex, rose 42.8 percent in the nine months ended December 2025 compared to the same period last year. Prior to leading Aniplex, Iwakami worked on productions such as the "Monogatari" series, "Puella Magi Madoka Magica," and "Sword Art Online," and produced the mobile game "Fate/Grand Order" and the "Demon Slayer" anime adaptation.

A panel at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival argued that the growing gap between franchise and original anime films at the box office risks crowding out original works that serve as incubators for new talent. Original anime films have rarely earned more than ¥3 billion (US$19 million) domestically in recent years, while franchise films like Demon Slayer can reach ten times that amount. The panel included TMS Entertainment president Tadashi Takezaki, who noted that even among television shows and books, hit titles generate massive revenue while others barely register. The original anime film A New Dawn, from animator Yoshitoshi Shinomiya and co-produced by France's Miyu Productions, earned just ¥17 million (US$107,000) in its opening weekend in Japan, overshadowed by wider releases from established titles like Doraemon and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. High-quality franchise productions are also raising audience expectations for production quality, increasing costs and risk for original films, which can take four to five years to produce.

Japanese anime merchandise sellers are increasingly turning to cross-border e-commerce to offset a shrinking domestic market, according to a feature from Animenomics. Domestic anime merchandise sales have risen 50 percent since 2018 and now account for up to half of the entire domestic anime market, per data from the Association of Japanese Animations. However, retailers like Parco see Japan's declining population as a growing threat to continued growth. Parco general manager of digital promotion Masahiro Arita told Animenomics that market contraction driven by population decline has become a material challenge. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Parco reevaluated its e-commerce business and launched an online store in 2022 that sells products internationally. The company turned to e-commerce service provider Beenos, which was acquired by LINE Yahoo last year, to facilitate cross-border sales. Arita said Japan remains Parco's primary base, but the company believes the appeal and cultural value it generates should be accessible to audiences worldwide.

TV Asahi announced a four-year management plan aiming to double its anime production capacity by March 2030. The commercial broadcaster, known for Doraemon and Crayon Shin-chan, intends to shift from a television broadcasting business to one centered on IP creation. The plan follows recent successes with anime investments like Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube and Medalist. TV Asahi will increase the number of anime projects where it leads the production committee, retaining a greater share of licensing royalties to boost anime business profits by 50 percent. It also plans deeper collaboration with subsidiary Shin-Ei Animation and major shareholder Toei Animation. The broadcaster will expand late-night anime slots from three and strengthen ties with streaming service Abema. India is a target for IP growth, building on Crayon Shin-chan's success there. TV Asahi also seeks to recruit creators for a generative AI studio for anime, dramas, and commercials. The company says it remains committed to television after securing top viewer ratings last year.

Japan's domestic manga market contracted in 2025 for the first time in eight years, according to data from the Research Institute for Publications. The market shrank by 1.7 percent to an estimated ¥693 billion (US$4.45 billion). Print manga volume sales fell 14.4 percent, and manga magazine sales dropped 12.7 percent. Digital manga grew only 2.9 percent, pushing its market share to 76.1 percent of total sales, exceeding three-quarters for the first time. The slowdown in digital growth in the second half of the year meant it could no longer offset the decline in print. Manga's combined share of Japan's broader publishing market held steady at 44.8 percent. Titles with popular anime adaptations, such as Kodansha's Medalist and The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity, sold well, but no title matched the sales levels of My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, or Oshi no Ko, all of which ended publication in 2024. Despite falling revenue, publishers released over 16,000 new manga volumes in 2025, the largest annual increase since 2008. Convenience stores continued to reduce shelf space for books and magazines, further pressuring print sales.

Anime production companies are moving away from relying on legacy theatrical distributors like Toho, Shochiku, and Toei, instead forming their own domestic film distribution systems to retain a larger share of box office earnings. This week, Sony-owned Aniplex and publishing giant Kadokawa announced a joint venture called Animec for anime film distribution and promotion. The following day, Bandai Namco Filmworks established a new film distribution division, building on early success with the short film "Milky Subway: The Galactic Limited Express," which opened in fourth place at the Japanese box office last month despite screening in only 73 theaters and has earned over ¥400 million (US$2.5 million) domestically. Bandai Namco Filmworks also plans to use its distribution expertise to redistribute older films in its catalog. The shift comes as anime's fourteen highest-grossing films in 2025 earned a cumulative ¥90.1 billion (US$573 million) at the Japanese box office, with at least half of that going to distributors.

Japan's domestic anime home video market fell 31 percent in 2025 to ¥18.7 billion ($118 million), according to the Japan Video Software Association's annual survey. Sales revenue dropped 34 percent to ¥16.3 billion ($103 million), the fastest rate of decline in at least 25 years excluding a 2022 post-pandemic correction. Unit sales fell more than 36 percent to 2.3 million discs, about half the volume sold in 2020. Rental revenue posted its first gain in nearly 20 years, rising 7.8 percent to ¥2.35 billion ($14.8 million). Streaming revenue among JVA members increased 48 percent from 2024 and is now 2.4 times the 2021 figure. The JVA reorganized its animation home video categories starting with the 2025 edition, shifting from target age demographics to original medium categories such as television, direct-to-video, or film. Anime home video revenue is now less than one-fifth of its 2005 peak. The report also notes that manufacturers are packing more episodes per release, pushing the average sales price per unit up 35 percent over the last decade.

The Sakuga Blog published a lengthy analysis of Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc on January 6, 2026, arguing that the film is the most representative example of how high-profile anime are currently made. The piece frames the movie as a direct escalation of the production methods used in popular TV anime, taken to theatrical extremes. It contrasts the film with other 2025 event movies, such as Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle and Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback, which the author says are either non-replicable exceptions or continuations of existing trends. The analysis focuses heavily on series director Tatsuya Yoshihara, tracing his career from his early work on Arve Rezzle through his time on Black Clover and his role as action director on the Chainsaw Man TV series. The article describes how Yoshihara brought a TV-anime sensibility to the film, prioritizing exaggerated, fun expressions over the more subdued character acting typical of theatrical releases. It also highlights the film's staff, including action director Souta "Honehone" Shigetsugu and a roster of animators frequently seen in current TV hits. The piece concludes that the film embodies the possibilities of current anime production methods and challenges similar projects to match it.

Japan's Fair Trade Commission published findings from an inquiry into labor practices in the anime industry, focusing on structural issues in the production committee model, copyright ownership, and bargaining power across the supply chain. The report, released last month, examines four types of business relationships: between production committees and prime contractor studios, between prime contractors and subcontractors, between studios and freelancers, and between global streaming platforms and prime contractor studios. The commission indicated it is prepared to create formal guidelines to regulate how committees, studios, subcontractors, and streamers negotiate and share information. Anime studios reported being effectively forced to give up intellectual property rights without meaningful compensation, which the JFTC flagged as a potential abuse of the committees' superior bargaining position. Subcontractors said cost-cutting at prime contractor studios creates a "race to the bottom" for wages at smaller studios and among freelancers. Half of anime studio producers surveyed said streaming companies do not disclose viewership data, hindering fair negotiations and revenue-share transparency. The Nippon Anime & Film Culture Association, an anime labor advocacy group, praised the commission's work in a statement.

Japanese film distributor Gaga will directly distribute the Umamusume: Pretty Derby - Beginning of A New Era film in North America starting in February through its Los Angeles office, following a similar move by Toho in 2024. The film, based on Cygames' mobile game franchise, earned ¥1.4 billion (US$8.9 million) in Japan and arrives two years after its domestic debut, as the English-language mobile game gained popularity after winning Best Mobile Game at the Game Awards in December. Gaga aims to replicate the success of its own direct distribution of a concert film by singer Ado across over 300 theaters last year. Meanwhile, MAPPA entered a strategic partnership with Netflix for exclusive distribution of multiple self-produced anime titles, as reported by Nikkei. Edia is ramping up anime production for its own light novel properties, developing at least five new titles for broadcast in 2028 and beyond, up from three in the prior period. The company, which owns publisher Hifumishobo, previously invested small amounts in production committees for Drugstore in Another World and The Aristocrat's Otherworldly Adventure.

Japan's digital manga sales grew at their slowest rate on record in 2025, rising just 2.9% year-over-year, according to annual data from the Research Institute for Publications compiled by Animenomics. The slowdown accelerated in the second half of the year, where growth was only 1.5%, down from 4.6% in the first half. Print manga sales fell 15%, the largest drop since 2022, as several hit series including My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Oshi no Ko ended publication in 2024 and no new blockbuster titles emerged to replace them. Japan's overall print publishing market fell below ¥1 trillion (US$6.5 billion) for the first time in 50 years, far below its 1996 peak of ¥2.6 trillion. The broader publishing market declined 1.6% to ¥1.55 trillion (US$10.1 billion), its fourth consecutive year of contraction. Digital manga now accounts for three-quarters of the total manga market, but the sharp deceleration suggests that growth may plateau sooner than expected.
