The TV anime Hotaru no Yomeiri held a preview screening on September 6 at United Cinemas Toyosu, showing episodes 1 through 3 ahead of its October 9 premiere on Fuji TV's noitamina block. Voice actors Lynn, Kouki Uchiyama, and Kento Itou appeared in kimono, discussed their auditions, and played a game guessing which scene Lynn found most romantic. The answer was the episode 2 scene where Shinpei shows Satsuko fireflies and confesses his love.

The Tokyo performance of YUKIHIDE "YT" TAKIYAMA's LIVE 2026 UNCHAINED tour will stream in real time on September 19 through the FanStream app and StreamPass platform. The staff for the second season of The Detective Is Already Dead, based on the light novel series by Nigoju and Umibozu, revealed a third promotional video, new cast members, and an October 7 premiere on Friday. The anime will debut on Tokyo MX at 10:30 p.m., with streaming starting earlier at 10:00 p.m. on d Anime Store. It will also air on AT-X and BS NTV, with additional streaming services to follow. Kadokawa had previously scheduled the season for July before delaying it to October. New cast members include Akari Komiyama as Mia Whitlock and Nobuhiko Okamoto as Scarlet, both introduced in the trailer. Okamoto's Scarlet is described as one of the Tuners and identified as the "Vampire," while Komiyama's Mia Whitlock is another Tuner holding the role of "Priestess." Manabu Kurihara returns to direct at ENGI, with Deko Akao handling series scripts and Yosuke Ito designing characters. The opening theme "Kono Shinzo ni Hanataba wo" is performed by Kokorone, while Kagura Nana performs the ending "Hakuchumu." Both themes are written, composed, and arranged by 40mP.

The game covers the Hida limited express from Nagoya to Toyama, the series' longest route at 256.1km and about 3.5 hours of driving, and releases December 17 on Switch. Archipel will hold The Tenth Mosaic, a two-day game culture festival, on September 22-23 at Tokyo Nichi-Futsu Gakuen. Frontier Works released a promotional video for the television anime based on Atamoto's Tanuki to Kitsune manga, revealing the first footage and the voice cast. Misaki Kuno plays Tanuki, Nao Tōyama plays Kitsune, Toshiyuki Morikawa plays Ōkami, Maria Naganawa plays Usagi and the narrator, and Takuma Nagatsuka plays Kuma and Usagi. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey began IMAX advance screenings in Japan on September 4, and demand is running ahead of supply. Grand Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro sold out every showing for September 4 and 5 within hours of tickets going on sale, and other Tokyo theaters reported sold-out screenings piling up. The advance run continues through September 10, ahead of the nationwide release on September 11.
The screenings arrived with a wave of celebrity comments. Director Lee Sang-il called the film "a movie at the extreme point," manga artist Mari Yamazaki said it showed the maturity of film history, and game creator Hideo Kojima praised the all-IMAX presentation as "an Odyssey no one has seen." Astronaut Soichi Noguchi, who returned from space, said the story of a hero carrying guilt after war left him in awe. The film, based on Homer's epic and starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, is the first feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras. Its worldwide box office reached $1.5526 billion (about 251.5 billion yen) as of August 30, the highest for a Nolan film and the highest ever for an R-rated release.

Netflix announced on September 1 that its original series Fujiyama Boy will premiere worldwide in January 2027. Wataru Ichinose stars as Kakuhata Kanta, a man who has been a shut-in for eight years and has zero romantic experience. Suzu Hirose plays Hamamiya Mami, Japan's top idol, whom Kanta vows to marry after his dying mother tells him she dreamed of the union. The story follows Kanta's sudden declaration that he will marry the idol and his subsequent struggle to make that happen. Ichinose, who previously starred in the Netflix series Sanctuary, said he was surprised to hear Netflix wanted him for a love story and that he felt obligated to give his all since Netflix changed his life. Hirose described the project as quite funky and said she wondered why she was cast, but praised the explosive strength of her character. The series is directed by Yu Irie, known for the SR Saitama no Rappers films and An no Koto, with scripts by Shigeki Kaneko, who won the 38th Kuniko Mukoda Award for Ore no Hanashi wa Nagai. Executive producer Yuta Fukui said the story is about a man who recklessly pursues a love everyone calls impossible.

TV Asahi's classical music program "Music Concert Without a Title" will broadcast a special "Dragon Quest Concert conducted by Koichi Sugiyama" on September 26 at 10:00. The program will feature the late composer appearing via VTR, delivering famous tunes he conducted himself along with exclusive talk, according to the official website. Koichi Sugiyama composed music for the Dragon Quest series from its first installment, creating well-known pieces including "Overture (Roto's Theme)" and "To Fly in the Sky." The final chapter of Shuu Katayama's Fujori Zakkaten Unreal will run in the October issue of Shinshokan's Wings magazine, the magazine's X account announced. The fifth compiled volume ships in late November. The manga follows an unusual shop that sells people's thoughts, where customers' lives change greatly and owner Yagio watches with cold eyes. It launched in June 2022 and inspired a live-action series in 2025 and a stage play in January.

Yukino Sonoyama's manga Bless is getting a live-action drama series that will stream worldwide on Amazon Prime Video in spring 2027. Naniwa Danshi idol group member Ryusei Onishi stars as Aia Udagawa, a former model who wants to become a makeup artist. Onishi prepared for the role by visiting SABFA, a hair and makeup school run by Shiseido, to learn professional techniques and mannerisms before filming began. The production has full cooperation from Shiseido, with top hair and makeup artist Ikuko Shindo serving as makeup supervisor. Izuru Kumasaka and Maki Tomita are directing, while Satoko Okazaki and Ichiro Kusuno are writing the scripts. Amazon MGM Studios is presenting the project, and C & I Entertainment is producing. The manga, which debuted in 2022, now runs in Monthly Shonen Sirius. Kodansha will publish the ninth volume on October 8, and the series has more than 1.25 million copies in circulation. A-1 Pictures announced in March that it is producing a 2027 television anime adaptation of the same manga.

The series follows Shingo Asahina, who shelters a bloodied man at an amusement park and learns the park will become hell in 30 minutes. Yamazaki debuted the manga in Afternoon magazine on February 25; the first volume shipped in Japan on July 22.

NBC Universal revealed two new cast members for the television anime of Otsuji's My Stepmother and Stepsisters Aren't Wicked manga on Monday. Hiroki Nanami plays student council president Sadame Mikuriya, and Nao Toyama plays vice-president Hachi Ura. The characters appear in the anime's eighth episode on August 26.

Prime 1 Studio has opened orders for a pair of 1/5 scale statues based on Hiroshi Hiroyama's Blu-ray BOX illustration from 'Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya'. The figures, Illyasviel von Einzbern and Miyu Edelfelt, belong to the Concept Master Line series and reproduce the slipcase art of the first TV season's Blu-ray BOX. Each statue stands at 35cm and includes a special base with star-flower effects from the transformation sequence. The standard versions are priced at 85,690 yen, while DX and DX bonus versions add interchangeable head parts and are priced at 94,490 yen. The DX bonus versions are sold exclusively at Prime 1 Studio's online store in Japan. Orders are accepted from August 26 to October 26, 2026, with release scheduled between January and April 2028. The statues are made of polystone and weigh approximately 1.75kg for Illya and 1.5kg for Miyu in their standard versions. The two figures are designed to be displayed together, representing the front and back of the slipcase and the bond between the characters.

Mebius announced on August 27 that it will release Bazoo! Magic World, a Super Famicom RPG originally published by Hot B in 1993, for the Nintendo Switch on November 26, 2026. The game, set in the fantasy world of Ialtis, follows a protagonist who learns his deceased father was a renowned sorcerer and embarks on a journey to become a mage. Character design is by Akihiro Yamada, known for the Twelve Kingdoms series and the TV anime RahXephon. The original version was Hot B's final work, released two days after the company's bankruptcy was decided on July 21, 1993. It became a premium collector's item, with used prices for a complete set reaching 41,000 yen as of 2026. The Switch version adds quality-of-life features: save/load anywhere, adjustable screen size, a five-level play speed option, and a rewind function. The download version costs 2,980 yen, the standard physical edition 4,400 yen, and a limited Special Limited Edition at 11,000 yen includes a newly illustrated box, an original soundtrack, and an art book. The game is also compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.

Arc System Works producer Takeshi Yamaguchi and director and lead battle designer Kazutoshi Sekine gave interviews about MARVEL Tokon: Fighting Souls, the Marvel fighting game published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and released in August 2026 on PS5 and PC. The game uses a 4v4 tag battle system, and Sekine said the format was chosen to express the Marvel team-up world and to deepen team tactics through many character combinations. The game supports both traditional command inputs and simple one-button controls such as Quick Skills and Link Attacks, so players can start with a single character. The team confirmed Phoenix Cyclops as the first Year 1 DLC character, currently in development. The interview also covered Deadpool's parody easter eggs, which Sekine said are not all discovered yet, and PC performance. Yamaguchi said two emergency patches were released on August 10 and August 21 to reduce CPU load and frame drops, and the team considers the CPU load now comparable to or lighter than other Arc System Works fighting games.

DMM Pictures revealed a teaser promotional video and the January 2027 debut for Ore to Yu Nii!, the television anime based on Miyuki Nakayama's Shota Oni boys-love manga. Studio Hibari is animating the series, with Noriko Hashimoto directing and Yuniko Ayana overseeing the series scripts. The voice cast features Shinnosuke Tokudome as Tsubaki and Shuichiro Umeda as Yu. The story follows an elementary school boy named Tsubaki and his high school childhood friend Yu, whom Tsubaki loves but who treats him like a child. Nakayama debuted the manga in September 2021 on the Comic CMOA website as part of the launch for Square Enix's boys-love label Gangan BLiss. The manga won the Best Next Generation (Newcomer) award at boys-love website Chil-Chil's 13th annual BL Awards in 2022. Square Enix published the manga's seventh volume on March 21.

Kadokawa released the first main promotional video for the Matsurika Kanriden television anime on Friday, confirming that the rock band KANA-BOON performs the opening theme song "Hana Hanashi" (Flower Talk). The anime, based on the light novel series by Rinne Ishida with illustrations by Izumi, is scheduled to premiere in January 2027 and will air on Tokyo MX, MBS, TV Aichi, and BS11 in Japan. The promo also introduced three new cast members: Takeo Ōtsuka as Tenga Rei, Kōtarō Nishiyama as Shisei Hō, and Shō Komura as Shunsetsu Shō. They join previously announced leads Rie Takahashi as Matsurika Kō and Nobunaga Shimazaki as Emperor Hakuyō. Takeshi Mori supervises the series, Yūichi Nakazawa directs at Maho Film, Tōko Machida handles series composition, Manami Inose designs the characters, and Takurō Iga composes the music. The story follows Matsurika, a court lady at the emperor's inner palace known for her good memory, who meets Emperor Hakuyō and is told to pass the civil service exam before approaching him.

Manga artist Ayano Yamane announced she has withdrawn from the manga adaptation of Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou's The Husky and His White Cat Shizun novel series. Libre Publishing had announced minutes earlier that the project is suspended. Yamane apologized for previous social media posts that caused discomfort and concern.

Twin Engine announced on August 19 that stage greetings for the revival screenings of Super Kaguya-hime! will take place on September 20 at three theaters. Yuko Natsuyoshi, Anna Nagase, Saori Hayami, and director Seigo Yamashita will reunite for five shows, their first gathering since February.

Stormind Games announced on August 18 that Remothered: Red Nun's Legacy, the final chapter in the Remothered trilogy, will launch on October 27. The game is a third-person survival horror title influenced by the Clock Tower series, set in a Sicilian convent where the legend of the Red Nun originated. Players control Susan, whose daughter has gone missing after six girls disappeared in Sicily; she follows a clue from an audio tape to the Ashmann family mansion on Mount Etna. The gameplay involves exploring the mansion, solving puzzles, and using hypnotic abilities such as retrocognition, mirror abilities, and moth control. Players must also hide from and evade terrifying pursuers, striking back at decisive moments. The Red Nun, a recurring monster in the series, reappears. Akira Yamaoka, known for his work on the Silent Hill series, composes the music. The game is scheduled for PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.com, as well as Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with Japanese display planned. It follows Remothered: Tormented Fathers (2018) and Remothered: Broken Porcelain (2020), and can be enjoyed as a standalone despite concluding the trilogy.

Detective Conan creator Gosho Aoyama revealed on Saturday that he has already drafted the thumbnail layouts, or name, for the manga's final chapter. He made the comment during an interview segment on YTV's 24-Jikan Terebi Saishin Jōhō SP program with singers Taiga Kyōmoto and CHANMINA, both self-described fans of the series. CHANMINA, who said she plans her life by thinking backward from the end, asked Aoyama if he works the same way. Aoyama answered that he has drafted the final chapter's layouts, then jokingly offered to show them. Kyōmoto, who had heard the rumor before, cautioned CHANMINA not to take him up on it. Aoyama described the draft as entertaining but gave no story details or timeline for the manga's conclusion. The interview also touched on the series' longevity. Aoyama said he initially expected Detective Conan to end quickly and first realized its popularity with the release of the first theatrical film. He also recalled a conversation with One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda about the unusual experience of having their manga adapted into weekly anime. Detective Conan has run in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday since January 1994, with 108 volumes released as of April 2026.

Yume Nairai, head of human resources firm Yuinaira, appears in the film Devil Cafe: Welcome to Finis, opening August 16, 2026, and wrote, composed, and sang its opening theme, "Flower Bud." The film adapts the Chiba TV drama Devil Cafe and stars Mahiro Yamaguchi.

The One Piece x NBA MASTER STARS PIECE figure line opens reservations for its fourth wave. Yamato wears the Milwaukee Bucks uniform and Trafalgar Law wears the Golden State Warriors uniform. Both figures ship in January 2027 and are available through e-BANPRESTO on Premium Bandai. Two more characters are planned for the series.

Nijimen published its 2026 reader poll ranking Kisho Taniyama's most iconic roles, with 3,345 votes cast between July 28 and August 11. Bungo Stray Dogs' Chuuya Nakahara took first place with 488 votes, marking five consecutive years at the top. The top three of Chuuya, Natsuki Shinomiya, and Jean Kirstein held their positions from last year.

The Pokemon official YouTube channel released the new POKETOON short Kameil to, Natsu no Tsuzuki on August 12. The story follows a boy named Rikuto who visits his grandmother on an island and meets a long-lived Kameil whose tail color differs and whose shell has moss. The Pokémon Company released a new POKÉTOON short titled "Kameil to Natsu no Tsuzuku" (Wartortle and the Ongoing Summer) on its official YouTube channel on August 12. Shingo Yamashita, known for his opening direction on JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 1 and Chainsaw Man Season 1, directed the short at Studio Chromato and Studio Colorido. The story follows a boy named Rikuto who visits his grandmother on an island at the end of summer and meets a Wartortle with a differently colored tail and a moss-covered shell. The Wartortle turns out to have been friends with Rikuto's father 30 years earlier. Aya Satsuki wrote the script, Riiki Miura designed the characters and served as chief animation director, and Kyosuke Kagawa composed the music. The cast includes Sayaka Senbongi as Rikuto, Kana Hanazawa as Wartortle, Tasuku Hatanaka as Gaku, Akiko Hiramatsu as Shuri, Natsumi Haruse as Leafeon, and Michiyo Murase as Bellsprout. Yamashita previously directed Pokémon: Twilight Wings in 2020 and the 2021 POKÉTOON episode "Yume no Tsubomi," both animated by Studio Colorido.
