Rakuten Viki will premiere The Painted Soul, a 10-episode animated series co-produced with South Korean company Imaginus, on October 21 in select international markets. Directed by Junbae Choi, the fantasy romance follows Yun Hwa, an apprentice spirit painter who frees Seol Jin, a man sealed inside a painting. Viki said Imaginus creatives used AI and other technologies to develop the concept and storytelling.
The third season's first three episodes, numbered 49 through 51, set up two long-running threats rather than single-episode problems. Hasegawa will release a 1/72 scale kit of the Su-33 Flanker D flown by Shadows from Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve. The aircraft parts are dark gray, a display stand is included, and the package uses CG imagery. New decals cover the Sotoa Air Force, 1st Special Operations Air Wing, 11th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 44th Flight, Lux Lunae, known as Shadows. The finished kit measures 305.5 mm long and costs 5,500 yen, scheduled for release on Wednesday, December 16, 2026.
Oricon's Monthly Comic Ranking for September 2026, tracking estimated print sales from August 31 to September 27, puts the fifth volume of Yama Wayama's Hoshi in the Girls' Garden at #1 with 182,399 copies. Kagurabachi volume 12 is #2 at 124,297, and Dandadan volume 25 is #3 at 114,716. Kingdom volume 80 ranks eighth for the month but carries the largest cumulative figure in the top 20 at 446,040.
Weekly Shonen Champion's 46th issue announced that yoruhashi will start a new manga, Tatarigatachi -Dochakushin Geigeki Gakuin-, in the magazine's next issue on Thursday. The story follows a young boy named Raran, whose older sister prays to the cat god in the mountain and falls victim to a divine disaster, prompting Raran to vow to destroy all curses.
ABEMA has confirmed its fall 2026 anime lineup: more than 70 new and continuing titles running free on its anime channels. Every episode of The Apothecary Diaries, from season one through the latest season three episode, streams free through the end of January. Sgt. Frog☆, Dragon Ball Super: Beerus and the Demon Slayer-like桃源暗鬼 arc sit alongside earlier-first exclusives such as Reincarnated as a Sword II.
Wataru Yamamoto, a puzzle writer at real escape game producer SCRAP, has released a run of short horror games playable in about one to two minutes. His first, "Blink Check," asks players to tap the closed-eyed people in a group photo; its announcement post has about 31,000 likes and more than 10 million impressions. "Ladder," released October 12, offers seven endings and drew about 29,000 likes. The latest is "Eraser," released October 18.
An unofficial effort to bring Bethesda Softworks' The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall online, called DFO Online, is under fire for its Patreon. Plans start at $5 a month, with a $15,000 tier listed. As of writing the page shows 85 paid members and $1,253 a month in support. The developer, Lattymoy, says donations are not mandatory and funds go to development time and tools.
The Star Detective Precure! film has sold 977,000 tickets and earned an estimated 1.24 billion yen in its first month, passing the 1.24 billion yen total of 2024's Wonderful Precure! The Movie! Dokidoki Game no Sekai de Daiboken! and becoming the franchise's highest-grossing standalone film. It opened in Japan on September 18 and ranked third in its opening weekend, selling 358,000 tickets for 446 million yen in three days.
Crunchyroll will begin streaming an English dub of the Psyren television anime on Monday, with Dylan Ray Owen voicing Ageha and Kelly Greenshield as Amamiya. Dani Chambers directs the dub, Zach Bolton produces, James Cheek adapts the script, William Dewell mixes, and Jose Sandoval engineers. The anime debuted on October 5, streams worldwide excluding Japan and China, and adapts Toshiaki Iwashiro's manga through its conclusion.
SHINING 3D has announced the FreeScan Combo+ Wireless, a cable-free version of its Combo series 3D scanner. It uses Wi-Fi 7 for data communication and a rechargeable battery rated for up to 2 hours of continuous scanning. Game & Co. and Samurai Kobo will air the first terrestrial TV commercial for the trading card game Xross Stars from October 20, 2026, nationwide except in some regions. The 15-second spot is titled "[Xross Stars] Appearing as a card! LEO joins Cross" and features Ryosuke Yamada in two personas: the artist Yamada and the streamer LEO, who is affiliated with the professional gaming team Crazy Raccoon. The two appear together on screen for the first time. Yamada also took the stage as LEO at an announcement event on October 19. He said the costume was settled through discussion with his own input, and on seeing the finished card he said, "It's super cool! Maybe a little too cool." He described LEO as his off-duty state. The commercial will also go up on YouTube on October 20, and a making-of plus interview video is planned for later release. Deserters, an adult fantasy strategy game from doujin circle WhiteCute & AlphaNuts, is being distributed in a cracked, modified and translated pirate version, the developer said. The game launched on DLsite on March 14 after nine years of rebuilding a feature-phone title for PC. A new publisher had begun moving toward a Steam release as of September, with Chinese-language support in preparation. On October 17 the developer said the piracy means "it's over as a business" and that he is stepping away from activity.
A hands-on demo of Dragon Quest Monsters 4: Bianca and Flora of the Withered Tree Kingdom, set for December 3, 2026, shows the two Dragon Quest V heroines as childhood Monster Masters. Players pick Bianca or Flora, and both travel together either way. Each has different scouting affinities and support effects. Scouting happens in battle, after a fight, or directly on the field, and party size depends on monster size.
E Ink announced Kaleido 4 on October 15, 2026, a color e-paper platform with twice the color gamut volume and 50 percent improved contrast over the previous generation, plus 15 percent higher white reflectance. It supports video playback at up to 18fps. The first device to use it is Hanvon's M10C II e-note, which pairs a new front light with the T2000 timing controller. Japanese release and pricing are unknown.
Anomaly Innovations, which runs the open-source AI coding tool OpenCode, confirmed unauthorized access to an old system on October 17, 2026. API keys for OpenAI, Anthropic and others stored in OpenCode Console workspaces may have leaked, and the company says 1.4% of Console users were affected. Some users report drained balances and unrecognized charges. Anthropic says it has invalidated affected Claude API keys.

Legendary Entertainment's live-action Street Fighter film opened at No. 1 in the U.S. with an estimated $31 million, and added an estimated $20.1 million from 65 overseas markets, for about $51.1 million worldwide. IMAX screenings brought in $7.7 million globally. The film opened October 16. Deadline reported the opening came in below the $70 million the staff had hoped for, against an $82 million production budget.
Hori has opened Amazon preorders for the Electric Ocarina of Time, an officially licensed Nintendo accessory for Nintendo Switch 2, after preorders had been limited to the company's own Hori Store. The electronic ocarina is scheduled for release on November 5 at 7,980 yen, the same day as the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time it is built to work with. Amazon orders currently list delivery for November 6, one day after launch. The device is not a real ocarina and is not played by blowing into it. The Switch 2 console picks up its sound, letting players play along with performance scenes in the game. It has two modes: Free Play, where finger holes are covered as on a real ocarina, and Auto Play, where songs from the game play automatically and can be triggered with buttons. Inside counts 12 songs in Auto Play. A volume dial and earphone jack are included.
The Chiikawa Jet, a Boeing 767-300 painted with Chiikawa and Hachiware across the fuselage, entered ANA service on Monday, October 19, with the first flight leaving Haneda for Nagasaki at 8:15. It will fly domestic routes across Japan. GROOVE X will run a second crowdfunding project in mid-November 2026 to deliver its LOVOT robots to child welfare facilities nationwide. The first project, in November 2023, drew support from 36,755 people and delivered 125 LOVOT sets to 71 facilities. Fujitsu's Arm-based server CPU Monaka, successor to the A64FX, targets HPC with a 144-core design split across four pairs of core dies. The core dies use TSMC's N2P process while the SRAM and IO dies use 5nm, stacked on a silicon interposer. Monaka carries DDR5-8000 memory across 12 channels and a 256-bit SVE2 implementation. FP64 support is in scope; NVLink Fusion is deferred to the next-generation Monaka-X.
HP Japan announced the HP OmniBook 5 14, a personal laptop aimed at students and young professionals. The official website for Tsuburaya Productions and Toei Animation's Kaiju Decode CG project revealed a teaser trailer, a new teaser visual, and a 2027 debut for Kaiju Decode: The Ring of Aidara on Sunday. Aya Yamane plays Maru and Karin Takahashi plays Coco. The story is set in Sakai in Osaka prefecture, with Katsuie Shibata writing the screenplay and Masayuki Gotou designing the monsters.
